  1. RAM can be accessed a lot faster than a hard disk drive (HDD), so your operating system (OS) will store the data for applications/services you are running in the RAM.  If a machine has too little RAM, the OS will start using 'Virtual memory'.  Virtual memory is stored on your HDD, so your OS will swap out data between the RAM and the HDD (virtual memory) depending on what is needed most at the time.

If you run out of RAM because you open too many applications at once, or the application needs more resources than you have RAM, you will run into performance degradation.

The amount of RAM that you have is important for how many application can be running at once, or how large of an application can be run.

The speed of the RAM determines how fast the mother board can read and write the data.

If you are not running out of RAM, you can still make the PC run faster if you can upgrade the speed of the RAM you are using.

If you are running out of RAM, you will notice a gain just by adding more RAM of the current speed.
