Actually, i'm pretty sure that the Russians will be disappointed by this years medal total. Being as far behind the US and China as they are is not within the traditions of the Russian/USSR Olympic team.

Because their sports programs are state run and they fund it heavily. The US and other countries on the other hand, have to train privately if they can't find sponsorship, which is a burden on individual finances.

It's a big country with a strong foundation and infrastructure to help nuture great athletes and sports teams, much of the foundation is still there from its USSR days.
