How does salt effect the environment after it melts ice during the winter?

  1. For one thing, it kills my grass.  Most plants are not able to deal with high levels of salt in the soil, so they can die if exposed to too much salt.  The ancient Romans were known for pouring salt on the fields of their enemies.

    Also, salt can get into the groundwater.  When this water is used for drinking water then more processing is needed to make the water drinkable.  This costs money.
