How does science (natural sciences like biology, chemistry, etc.) make you a better citizen?

The basic answer is that science gives people a better understanding of the world. There is a whole ecosystem, not just humans inhabiting this land. So if you have a better understanding of the world you will think twice before doing something that harms the ecosystem. Then you will be a better citizen.
