  1. On a beach with a gentle (1:10) slope a 1 mm rise in sea level can result in the coastline receding 1 cm.  High tides and storm surges may reach that much farther inland.

    BTW it takes about 357,000,000,000  metric tons (357 cubic kilometers) of water to raise sea level by 1 mm.
