How does sending products on E-bay work?

I know the basic info, I am only selling, I don't buy at all on E-bay, I am only interested in selling. I was wondering if people who use E-bay and all could tell me could place to get package boxes, envelopes to send. The actual packaging paper like long brown envelopes. I see them in Supermarkets or does FedEx, UPS, or USPS supply them. Do I walk into FedEx, UPS, etc with the package ready to go stamp and all? or Do I bring just the product and FedEx takes care of packaging and stuff. Hope you understand what I'm talking about. These are the questions.

Where do I get the packaging equipment? I know buyer pays for shipping but do I pay it and get the money back or buyer pays first like ordering online, where I use the buyer shipping money to ship the item, and keep the rest? Do I walk into FedEx with the item packaged and ready to deliver or do FedEx or UPS or USPS handle it for me? Which company is easier to ship? Thanks.

  1. Your local postal service provider can provide and assist you in recommending the type of packages for your items. You can also purchase it at their browsing section.

Once you have learnt how to package it properly, you can then source your own for cheaper alternative.

While at your postal service provider, enquire about the cost of shipping and in future, include it in your selling cost to keep it simple. You can  also check their website for the related shipping charges over time.

You choose the company that suit you comfortably,i.e, their cost, service, delivery time.

  2. UPS stores will do everything for you, from providing all of the supplies you need to packing items before shipping.  But they charge an arm and a leg for this, and no buyer on eBay will pay you what that costs.  FedEx and the post office will sell you supplies (The PO gives you priority mail boxes and envelopes for no charge but you have to use them for priority mail), but they don't package items for you.

You can buy supplies a lot cheaper at places like Staples or Office Max.  But you have to know what kind of packaging you need for the specific item you have before you can have any clue of what the item will weigh to determine shipping cost (and a reasonable handling charge of no more than a dollar or two).  Buyers expect your supplies to be a part of your operating expenses and don't take kindly to being nickel and dimed for an envelope here, a cardboard box there, foam padding, whatnot.

Look around eBay for tutorials on packing and shipping. Don't start selling until you know what you're doing.
