  1. If you're asking about the effects of smoke from fire on our bodies then the answer is this:

All smoke contains CO (carbon monoxide), CO2 (carbon dioxide) and H2O (water). There are are other toxins released based on the product burning such as HCI (hydrogen cyanide) when PVC or plastics burn.

Basically as fire heats up matter, it converts it into a vapor which is burned in the combustion process. Unfortunately not all the gas is consumed and is released in to the air where when it meets with cooler air it forms a cloud or smoke.

When we breathe in the smoke, the CO2 is the dominate element and it enters our bodies through the lungs. The CO2 then enters the bloodstream where it combines with our blood 200 times more readily than O2 (oxygen). This crowds out the O2 in our blood creating carboxyhemoglobin. Since our bodies need the O2 to survive and it's being crowded out by CO2, we eventually asphyxiate and succumb to smoke inhalation.

We need 21 percent O2 to survive. We can go down to 19% and still remain conscious, but we feel dizzy and lightheaded. At 17% we are unconcious and near death. Without O2 at this point we will die. This is why firefighters wear SCBA (Self Contained Breathing Apparatus) into a fire. This is why we also recommend smoke alarms in your home to alert you and to pratice fire drills in your home so you can get out before it's too late.

    Hope this helps.
