  1. Solar water heating is pretty easy to explain.  The radient sun energy strikes the panel.   It heats up.  Voila.

    Solar photovoltaics are a bit trickier.  Basically, the light hits the solar panel (which is made of something called a semiconductor).   The light knocks an electron loose.  Electrons are what electricity is made of, so you just collect the electrons and you get electricity.
