  1. To acquire a title you have to be a British subject of citizen of the commonwealth. Most lords in the UK are life peers which means they are just for life. Can't be pass on from father to son. A royal letter patent is when the King or Queen grants someone a title.

Why is it some on this section think you can buy a title?

  2. If you are male, there are only a few ways;you inherit it;marry a princess an be given a title,or do something so worthwhile and so exceptionally well, that the government and sovereign grant you a title.

Most of these titles are inherited.Women may marry into the aristocracy, but it is very rare for a man to do so.Anthony Armstrong-Jones was made Earl Snowdon when he married Princess Margaret.

One of the greatest actors of all time,Laurence Olivier, contributed so much to his craft and to the style of acting, that he was made a baron.Composer-playrights Andrew Llod-Webber and Tim Rice are other examples that I can think of.

  3. kiss the right butts or bribe the right people.

  4. You can be the King's mistress and gain a title.

  5. the titles baron, viscount, earl, marquess or duke are granted by the Sovereign. She is the Fount of Honours.

A lord is one of the above plus certain members of the clergy and judiciary. It is also given to elder sons of the above (baron, viscount, etc.)  as an honorary designation, and does not mean membrship in the House of Lords UNLESS the lord in question has his own title. (Example:  Lord Somebody is the eldest son of the Duke of Omnium. Dujring a military campaign he performed so heroicallyl he was granted the title of Baron of Braveheart. As Lord Braveheart he may sit in the House of Lords, not as Lord Somebody.  Few if any titles are granted any more, and those are only for life; that is, children don't inherit them.

Being Lord or Lady So-and-So doesn't mean the titled person has any money. It often happens that the two goe together, but more often than not these days, the Lord has to go out and work for a living.  However there are some jobs tailor-maid for a lord. Like being on the Board of Directors of a fat corporation. A Lord on the Board is worth a pound or two.

  6. They have to be granted by the Sovereign of a country.

  7. Nobility really isn''t something you acquire.  It is inherited.  There have been times in history when it has been possible to BUY a title, but those days are pretty much gone.

If your father was not a baron, you are not a baronet, and you will not be a baron.  Unless you pay millions upon millions of dollars for one of about ten castles in Europe that do come with the titles attached.
