  1. High School Diploma and apply for it!

  2. The best thing to do is to visit the website of the police department that you are interested in. Most of them will have detailed information about the qualifications required, how to apply, and the hiring process. If you still have questions, call the department. Qualified applicants are in demand in many places. The time it takes to be hired varies a bit depending on the department.

  3. Get into an Academy and complete it and you will get your POST certification.

Most agencys require one to be 18 years

    us citizen

    clean driving record

    clean bacground

    pass polygraph test

no drug use for the past 2 years (marijuana)

any other drugs will be discussed weather one passes and gets into the academy.

it all depends on what county you are in this is all Sacramento County

  4. Different departments have different educational requirements - check that first. You need at least a HS diploma.

    1. Apply and take/pass the written test and oral boards

    2. Take/pass the physical agility test

    3. Pass the background investigation

    4. Pass the pre-poly and polygraph test

    5. Pass the psychlogical evaluation

    6. Pass the medical exam

    7. You can now enter the academy - once you graduate from the academy (6 months +/-) you're now assigned a field training officer. Once you've completed that for a year of paid service, you now have you Basic POST certificate.

Overall, it'll take 12-18 months or so for the entire process.
