How does someone grow less mature as they get older?

It's so counter-intuitive, but I honestly think a couple of my friends have gotten less mature over the last six months. Maybe it's because they're depressed, but they went from being popular, likable, caring people to just smoking pot and drinking every day and hanging out with just one or two unsavory individuals. Everyone adored them and there wasn't a whole lot of a reason for them to get depressed, and now we're all scratching our heads and wondering if they were just like that all along, or if something happened, and most importantly what we can DO because they're being a******s and not talking to any of the people who used to care about them anymore. What makes someone do this?

  1. Peer pressure, that's probably it. They thought that smoking pot, drinking etc was cool so they decided to do it. Most people get over it in a few years' time when they've learnt the lesson, but unfortunately they have to learn it the hard way, and by then it is too late.

Hopefully this is not the case for your friends, and the only thing I can suggest is having a good, long chat with them, make them feel nostalgic ("it used to be so much better before...what happened?"), explain the dangers of their ridiculous lifestyles in a way that will make them see they aren't being cool but really stupid. Now I know this is easier said than done, but from personal experience I know how much a frank, heart-to-heart talk can do.

If they see the error of their was, you can help them further by encouraging them to take up fun activities, taking up musical instruments, doing a sport, etc. - anything fun but not harmful.

    Hope that helps.

Best of luck for you and your friends :)
