I'm 5'9" and 255lbs. I only played on one sport team(and i wasnt good at all). I love volleyball, but I don't know how to begin to train or anything. I want to make the team for next year(August). I'm terrible at diet and exercise, but I want to try anyways. How do I build strength and speed and skills?

  1. Start working out, hitting, practicing. A lot of volleyball players are overweight.

  2. Purchase a very cheap practice volleyball.

This can be used outside on any surface, including brick and concrete. Find a wall you can spike against, and practice throwing the ball up and spiking it. It is bent elbow that straightens, adding the extra wrist curl upon contact with the ball. You can only practice 'setting' and 'spiking' by yourself.  You need someone to 'dig' with - or at least throw/catch the ball while you dig it.

If you get some friends together, you can dig, set and spike to each other (a net is not required) so that you develop confidence in your ball handling skills. It is great fun anyway to just hit the ball around, even non-volleyball friends can start picking up the basics - in just hanging out together...

If you go to some place with a net, all the better, then you'll see all the normal volleyball techniques in action, and join in.

It is by putting the hours of practice in, and getting enough game time with volleyball that your skills will improve drastically. It's usually the more experienced players that will win, over those who are new to it all.

  3. Umm go to a gym.

  4. what you should do is get someone, like a coach or someone you admire whos already on the team, and get them to give you advice on it...esp a coach would be good, cuz than they would know how serious you are about it!

  5. first...you might need to lose some weight...just make sure you maintain a healthy diet during  training....research about the rules and positions of the game...buy a volleyball and pass/set/hit/serve against a wall or 2 urself...then maybe get a trainer or talk 2 a friend or adult that can help you get into it more, you can practice with them it will help...see if you can join any beginner volleyball clubs in your area...also there are usually volleyball clinics at local universities during the summer...they help a lot...just keep up your fitness....have a good diet and go to the gym at least 4 times a week for good results...just practice a lot!!! hope this helps...

  6. Get a volleyball first of all.

    Practice bumping first.

Hit the ball against a wall in/out of your house and just hit it wen it comes toward you.

Pretend the wall is a net, and everytime the ball comes at you is because someone from the other team hit it toward you.

Serving the ball against the wall is also good practice.

Once you've got bumping down...try spiking.

Den go buy some knee pads..

wen bumping against da wall put the pads on and try sliding.

In between practices jump, and run a lot.

    Good Luck!

  7. Go to wannabemade.com. They have people that can really help you out.

  8. to get in shape-

RUN! it will help you beyond reason.

    LIFT WEIGHTS! gain muscle&strength

EAT WAT YOU WANT...but in smaller portions and be aware of your diet.

&DONT WORRY ABOUT YOUR WEIGHT- with the running and lifting wieghts, you may actually gain muscle weight but feel better about your image.

[note: the more muscle you have, the more you can eat. muscle burns calories on its own]

once you feel confident enough in your physical health, start practicing volleyball. join a club, or simply practice at home. volleyball is a wonderful sport. GOOD LUCK!
