How does something like a school become abandoned?

if there was a new school built in the area then,

they would use it instead of the old one.

and if they can't find the use for the school then,

no one uses it and it becomes abandoned.

It's probably a matter of money. When a building gets old the amount of maintenance required to keep it serviceable goes way up. Somewhere along the line it makes more sense to get a new buiilding and sometimes leaving the old one standing is cheaper than having it torn down.

Years ago no one wanted to invest in repairing my old high school. We had a new band room but everything else was old. All students were transferred to area schools which had been built later and had most up to date equipment. Parts of the old school are being used for functions in the comm.
