  1. This is a matter that our educationists should hve tackled it long back , because the training of the mind does not effect the heart. In fact , the trining of the heart should come in the childhood before the other formal education of the mind.

  2. I am not sure how much research has been done on this topic in grades k-12.  However,some prisons are experimenting with some classes which might come under this category. In our local penitentiary, they have semester long classes called " Impact of Crime on Victims".  We sometimes call these remedial empathy classes.  We talk about various crimes, the impact on the victims, and why such actions are wrong.   we use speakers ( usually victims), videos, disscussion, and roleplaying activities to get the inmates to put themselves in the position of the victims or families.   "Do onto others , as you would have them do unto you."  The students come from many (or no)  religious backgrounds, different gangs etc, but somehow we find some common ground.   What we find encouraging is the very low recidivism rate for the inmates who successfully complete this class ( and , yes, I have been known to have students removed and suggest they try it again later when they have matured)

Another source of information might be parochial ( church ) schools.   These have been around for a long time.  Morals and ethics were certainly part of our everyday classes.  I would like to think that some of that was beneficial.   I know people who grew up in abusive homes, but attended parochial school.  They consciously tried to emulate the nuns and monks who taught us.  They are grown, seem to have good family lives.... and their kids are being sent to parochial school.

Even public schools may teach some morals and ethics--- that will vary from teacher to teacher. For example, most schools emphasize the value of honesty, kindness, perseverance etc. However, they must be careful about how they go about teaching anything in depth, because some people object to education teaching anything that might be considered a moral or right/wrong.     An experienced teacher will guide a discussion in that direction and rely on students to use discussion to cover the right/wrong aspect. Of course, a teacher must be careful and know their students well before using that method. Sometimes classes are called "logic" especially in high school.
