How does the AC Compressor Affect your Vehicle?

I have a 99 Chevy Camaro, I have had the car for several months(used). Now that it is summer I see how my ac does not work. I took it to a mechanic to see what was wrong and he told me that my Compressor is DEAD!!!? Initially I was like okay lets fix it. Then he told me 1200 to fix it???!! What the world Im living from chk to chk. I am going to get it fixed but what do I need to know about driving my car without the ac compressor working?

It means nothing. It only controls the air conditioner. The most important thing is no AC Compressor costs $1200.00 and you can install it yourself. That mechanic is ridiculous. A used one is just as goo and they cost $100 used in California.

get another estimate that is way too high. compressors do not effect gas milage enough that you can tell,if someone tries to tell you they can feel the difference then they need to be working for NASA because no one is that sensitive

Driving your car or any car without A/C does not effect the operation of the car.In fact without it you will get a little better gas mileage.The compressor effects on the air condition and nothing else.

first i'd get another est., that is very high.the only effect it will have is no cool air.

If your AC compressor is dead, you won't have air conditioning.  It won't hurt your car to drive it that way.
