How does the CD player work in a 1999 ford mustang?

I recently bought a 1999 ford mustang convertible and everything works amazingly well. I just haven't been able to make the CD player work. Its the original one that came with the car and when I turn the car on the cassette player turns on showing the time or the radadio station but nothing with the CD player. I tried putting a CD in and see if it will take it after being inserted but it dosnt seem to take it in. I don't want to stick it all the way in there because I don't want to jam the CD in there. But mabey im suppose to? None of my friends have mustangs so I can't ask them, they tell me to just stick it in there and see if it takes it but like I said I dont want to get it jammed in there. So what Im asking is if everyone else is like that? or is it just mine? and should I try insterting it all in there and see if it takes it?

thanks
