I'm trying to figure out how exactly the Garmin NUVI 260's SD card slot works. Does the Unit come with software to use?

I'm also wondering how many programmable favorites the Unit has.

  1. The SD slot is for storing maps, photos, or music.  You just slip the SD card in there.  It is assigned a drive letter just like the GPS receiver's main memory when you connect it to the PC.  The unit does not come with any software.  You don't really need any because they pre-load it with the maps at the factory.  If you buy additional maps on DVD, you will have software to install for choosing the map sections you want and sending them to the GPS receiver.  If you buy maps preloaded on an SD card, you won't get any software.  Garmin does have two programs you may find useful.  Garmin's WebUpdater finds firmware updates for your unit.  POI Loader allows you to use GPX and .csv files to send custom points of interest to the unit.
