I went to Petsmart the other day and filled out an adoption form for a kitten. I gave it to the manager of the store and they told me that when the shelter organization. comes they will take the form and call my house. Just how does this system work?

  1. Depends on the shelter/rescue that the kitten belongs to. They will evaluate the application, and call you if they have any questions. Whether you are denied or approved, they will contact you and let you know.

Some shelters/rescues have specific requirements (no children under a certain age, indoor only, no declawing, etc.) and of course, if you have other pets, they want to see that you have a regular vet and those pets are kept up to date on their vaccinations & spayed/neutered.

Find out what shelter the kitten belongs to, and contact them for an update on your application.

  2. Well, the Petsmart employees don't really have much to do with the adoption system. The rescue agencies are really their own entity that just happens to reside in Petsmart. How the process goes really depends on the specific organization that you're adopting from. They'll likely review your application and call you to inform you whether or not your application has been accepted. Give it some time, they're usually pretty swamped with things to do.

  3. I worked with a woman who adopted a kitten from PetsMart, and it's actually a pretty intense process. I remember her commenting on how she felt like she was adopting a baby. They came to her house for a home visit and everything before she was approved for the adoption. I think it took a couple of weeks before she got to take the cat home.

Personally, I'd rather rescue an animal from a shelter or look for free kittens in the classifieds, since they are in homes that no longer want them.
