How does it work? I'm starting at level 5 with a base pay of 7.7 $/hr (part time, my position full time will yield more pay). How will the raises be distributed and how will my position develop, I.E.: what job positions could be possible for future promotion.

I'm 17 and it is my very first job. I like it a lot despite what people are saying about wal-mart.

  1. first thing you want to do is go into personnel and get on the computer - on the Wire and go to career preferences.  You'll have 'current interests' meaning areas of the store you'd be interested in besides where you're at.  That way if a position becomes available and it is a level higher than you are then you will be able to be interviewed for that position.  Level 7 is the highest and those are positions like department manager/merchandise supervisors of service departments- meaning departments that have cash registers like electronics, garden center, sporting goods and some office positions are level 7.

Then, there is the 'future interests' where you can put assistant manager, and manager trainee or loss prevention positions.

Since you are part time right now, and assuming you will go full time when you are 18 you should try and learn as much as you can for the position you have now.  Let your supervisor know that you want to learn more.  Ask if you can help do things - like set modulars, or anything really - you don't necessarily have to verbalize it, but just be their 'go to' person and even your assistant managers go to person.  That doesn't mean you have to kiss butt, that just means they can count on you to get whatever job they give you done.

There are so many areas to promote to at the company it really depends on what you want.  Be open to new things even if you dont' like the sound of it, it may turn out to be something you're good at or that you like.  Even if you don't know anything about the area - you will learn.  The  more you learn, the more valuable you are.

    good luck!
