How does the amount of rainfall effect agriculture?

  1. Plants need moisture to be able to assimilate the nutrients they need to grow and thrive.  Most of the moisture they need comes in the form of rain in most temperate climates.  So the more rain that occurs in a given climate, the longer the growing season and the larger crops that can be grown there.

    Where rainfall is not plentiful, irrigation systems can be built to store and release water as needed to extend the growing season and enrich crops.  Good irrigation can make up for less rainfall to a certain extent.

    Where there is little rainfall and no other source of water for irrigation, crops will be minimal and the growing season will be short.  Lots of people live under conditions like that, but it sucks.
