How does the amount of soil affect plant growth?

Can some one tell me how the amount of soil affect plant growth?Thanksz.This is for my science project.

i should say if it was in a pot the amount of soil would matter because the deeper the soil the more the root can spread which feeds the plant etc.. if it is in the ground i don't think it matters apart from the type of soil which depends on what type of plant is in it whether it will grow effectively or not, nutrients etc..hyave a look at a pot plant pull it out - if allowed and look at the roots etc..
