  2. I've heard pros and cons of both - my classroom is pretty busy but I just love it that way.  It's full of children's artwork and ABC's and 123's.  Sometimes it distracts the kids but we just look at what they're looking at and then go on with what we're doing. After all, those posters and pictures are there for their learning.  So, when they notice them, isn't that what I want?  It might not be when I want, but the kids make the schedule a lot!

  3. They don't pay attention/focus

i think its no big deal.

just fix the artwork so it fits the curriculum.

  4. Too much can be distracting.  Art work should ideally be by the kids themselves.

  5. In this day and age, we have lots of ADHD children. So, too much in the classroom will be way too distracting. I have a very streamlined classroom. I only have items up that are needed at that time. I know some teachers that put up everything they are going to use and so their wall are very cluttered.

  6. It can be distracting to young kids, who look at all the junk and do not pay attention to the teacher.

  7. When you walk into a class room-the environment is the first impression the children and visitors get.

    Ask yourself...

Is it safe, warm and cozy? Is it fun?

Does it make you want to stay there?

Is it NEAT & ORGANIZED where the children can easily find what they want and can also put it away?

Rooms should to be colorful and decorated. The rebuses and posters often provide reminders and reinforce learning and memory. They should reflect the children's interests, ages, and developmental level.

It's extremely important  to PERSONALIZE the space with the children's work.  It gives them a sense of ownership, accompishment, and pride. It shows them that you care about the work they do. That you find it valuable...this in exchange reinforces their feeling of competence.

If you follow these guidelines, the space won't deter from the children's learning--but enhance it...

  8. You should definitely display their work (art, writing, etc) and examples of group work, but too much "stuff" on the walls is overstimulating.  Take things down after a couple weeks and send it home or save it in the child's portfolio.
