Basically, Hens are put in to a very small cage...Just large enough to accommodate the hen (Prevents movement)...The bottom of the cage is sloped down so that when the hen lays an egg it rolles down for easy collection or to a conveyor belt...The Hens head sticks out of a small opening to the cage (battery cage) so that it can eat and drink...The food is also supplied on a conveyor belt ...Under the cage is, yet another conveyor belt to remove waste...Now, Take hundreds of these cages...place them in a row...and then stack six of these rows on top of on another...do this several times and place it all into a windowless warehouse with controlled lighting and heat...Because of the close proximity of the hens...they tend to peck each other ...so it is determined to prevent this...cut off the front part of the beak...The hens will spend their entire life in these cages and are replaced when they die...This practise is the main argument for free ranging chickens.
