How does the climate of Ivory Coast affect the agriculture/ crops there?

The Ivory coast has a tropical climate with about 6 months of a rainy season and 6 months of a dry season (no rain). During the rainy season there is no shortage of rain and they can raise almost any kind of crops. With irrigation they could almost double their agriculture production with a twelve month growing season.

Ivory Coast has from 1 to 2 metres of rainfall a year, which tends to cause soils to leach their nutrients during the rainy seasons along the coast. High temperatures mean that soils have almost no development of humus to retain plant nutrients.

A small contribution to fertility comes from sands blown in from the Sahara.

While a lot of small farmers  work hard to grow crops, Ivory coast is much like Cuba in that it fails to  grow enough food to sustain its population, and it has continued to grow primary crops that have lost popularity, hence price.

The climate is wet from May through September.

Discussion of irrigation to increase production is often mentioned for the inland (north) areas, because the South suffers more from over-watering that takes away too much soil nutrition. While in th north they get more soil on the wind and only about half the rain.

But where to get that water for irrigation in the north? By the time they need it, the south is getting only about the amount of rain they need.
