  1. Salt kills germinating seedlings by removing the water from their cells (plasmolysis, exomosis). Therefore, in general, there is a negative relationship between the concentration of NaCl (above a small baseline value*) and the percent germination of seeds.

    *Salts are present naturally in soil, and very low concentrations typically do not appreciably affect the germination of seeds.
