  1. here's how:

    air above water takes a longer time to cool compared to those above land. when air above land cools, the air above water would still be cooling. If the temp goes up after some time, the air above the land begin to warm up, and it will go up (nature of warm air) and the air above water (which is cooler now since when the temp. went up, its temp goes up slower than air above land, thus, making it cooler) will shift to the land (this is what you call the breeze) since cold air is heavy, it is below the warm air, so the coasts get cooler air.
