How does the cultural revolution affect asian culture?

Well, I lived in China for a year and the cultural revolution would've been a difficult time back then.  I know people weren't killed like with Hitlers rule, but I see it as similar in an ethnic cleansing kind of way, having cultural items prohibited along with traditional ways and methods.  I don't think there's a problem anymore, the Asian people are still taking on their cultural things there, and are open to SOME western ways of doing things.
