  1. Any small section of a circle can be considered as a straight line. The same way a small portion of a large globe is flat.

  2. This effect is due to the Earth's size.  Compared to a human and, specifically, a human's range of vision, the Earth is very large and its curvature is very slight.  Thus, across any distance related to regular human activity, the surface of the Earth is effectively flat.  However, you can see where the Earth's curvature takes the ground below your straight-line vision; that is the horizon.

  3. The Earth is big. We are small. The horizon appears flat because you can't see enough of the curvature from our point of view. If you go up on an airplane, maybe even a tower, you can see the curvature of the Earth.

It has nothing to do with different people's opinions. It has to do with what's true.
