How does the founder of Freecyle profit from his site?

Question

I have read about some disagreement with the moderators and the founder of Freecycle, namely that he took money from Waste Managment as a "sponsor". I have an MBA and am still confused by this. I have been a big fan of Freecycle and want to know what is going on. So my three questions are:

1. Why would WM "sponsor" Freecycle? What's the ultimate business/profit purpose? It can't be a charitable donation if HE is getting the money for himself, right?

2. Why do moderators care if he gets this money?

3. Should I get out of Freecycle to keep my Yahoo Group info safe?

Lately I've had so many freaking no-shows that I've gone back to donating to Goodwill anyhow....

1. Most counties have ordinances about waste reduction. Landfills are filling up fast, so they mandate more recycling and less dumping of trash. So WM can promote Freecycle as one part of the recycling effort.

2. I haven't a clue why some moderators care about the sponsorship. For Freecycle to grow requires more than just part time moderation, so be it.

3. Why would a Freecycle group impact your Yahoo Group info?
