How does the headlight bulb come out on a 2008 Beetle?

It needs a low beam bulb, but looks like the whole headlamp assembly has to come out b/c there`s no room to get to it from behind. If so, how does it come out?

  1. It takes a lot of work so just bring it in to the volkswagon shop

  2. this job takes an experienced tech quite a while to do it...battery removal...and lots of bolts and pieces is only part of the process depends on the side...whoever designed this nugen...must have never used their headlights, let some else do it for you

  3. Look at the indicator unit and on the outer edge is a small square plastic cover. use a small flat balde s***w driver to get it out of position and underneath is a cross headed s***w, undo that and the whole indicator unit will pivot out from that side.

Once out the bulb holder just twists out so you can replace the bulb with ease

  4. shaggy, the battery does NOT need to come out, don't scare the poster

second poster's right, there's a tab on the plastic ring that you need to pop, and then wiggle the whole light assembly out and disconnect the wires

access for the bulbs is a panel you undo at the back of the light assembly, and the low-beam bulb is the first one you encounter when you reach in

putting it back in requires even more wiggling, as you tighten the plastic ring and lock it in place (pay attention that you get the light back in flush to the body work)

don't worry if you break the plastic rings, dealers always have them on hand because their techs break them frequently, $20/side at the worst

you'll also want and H1 50 Watt bulb
