What's the science behind it, is it the same concept as the touch pad on my laptop?

  1. Different concept would be my guess, only because the laptop thing is more complex than it needs to be for the iPod (that works on the capacitance of your finger).

    I would guess there's some sort of pressure sensor under the iPod's wheel.  When you move your finger, it checks the pressure from the last time it measured against the pressure from your finger now to find how far/fast your finger moved.

    But I may be wrong.

    The way to tell if it's like a laptop touchpad is to see if it still works with the eraser of a pencil.  If it doesn't, I'm wrong, and it's the laptop touchpad method.

    It's also an easy Google if you're really curious, just have to do some digging.
