How does the irs determine whether or not you are out of the country?

if you fly out of the country you do need a passport but what if you just drive into canada? maybe homeland security will have you on file but i wouldnt be surprised if they didnt shar that information with the irs.

so... just how does the irs determine whether a person is in canada or not?

  1. They don't.

    Soon you will need a passport to drive back into the US from Canada


  2. The way the IRS records your address is from the last return filed. That is your official address, wherever in the world you may actually be.

    Unless you owe them money or unfiled returns, they really don't care where you are.

  3. They don't, but if you have a job, it gets reported.

  4. The IRS only cares about where you earn your money. That gets reported to them by the company you work for.
