How does the name d**k come Richard and the name Bob come from Robert?

Just checked the web and found one website that says the d**k from Richard is to do with the sound of the "R" in Norman French being rolled with the tip of the tongue and the English (Richard being Norman French in origin) not being able to roll their r's as the French do.

The Bob connection is probably from a trend in the middle ages for rhyming names. Hob is another one which used to be in  fashion. Peggy came from Peg, from Meg, from Maggie, and then from Margaret.

A lot of the name changes are probably from personal pet names that became common and were generally accepted as names.  Lots of todays names are "made up" names.  I made up (or thought I did) the name Sharilyn for my daughter, then found out I wasn't original after all.

Richard gets shorten to Ric and the name Ric rhymes with d**k and so people just use d**k as it sounds funny and now it's common. Robert shortens to Rob and Bob sounds more funny, so it is used. Same for William/Bill.

I wish I knew, I've always wondered that myself. Here's a really big stretch: why are some men named John given the nickname Jack? It's not shorter, so that's not it. Like President Kennedy was called Jack by his friends, and he's just one example.
