  1. There is a start value, which is the value of each move added up together. Then there is an execution score. If a gymnast does all the moves that is listed for the start value then she gets all those points. If she misses a move then she is deducted that move from the start value. The execution score is 10 points. For every waver on the beam, step out, bent foot, separated legs, etc there is a certain point deduction. At the end the start score and execution score are added up for the new score.

This new scoring system applies to more than the Olympics I believe. It came about because people felt the perfect 10 scoring was robbing girls of the score they deserved. Unfortunately this new system is just as bad if you look at Nastia Liukin's score on vault from the other night and the score that Chinese girl that wavered 4 times on beam got (Nastia scored low, Chinese girl scored high).  The movie Stick It explains why the perfect 10 is unfair when all the girls scratch on their events and let the best go and score 1st after the judges were biased against a girl on vault because they didn't like her coach. There's also a bunch of other stuff too, but that is basically it.

  2. Who cares? The Olympics are sooo boring! It's like watching grass grow.
