  1. Fill a cylinder with steam and let the piston move.  Cool the steam and as it condenses, the vacuum (low pressure) formed sucks the cylinder back, doing work like lifting water.

    Operates very slowly because of the need to  condense and therefore cool the cylinder.   Later improvements applied heated steam as pressure and pushed on both sides of the cylinder or used a flywheel to return the cylinder.
