How does the peace crop relate to the needs and interests of the United States?

As far as I know they do not. I've only heard of them going to places where people breed like rats and cannot take care of themselves or their offspring.

I'm assuming you mean Peace Corps.  As Volunteers we go into a nation to help bring specialized training and education in a variety of manners.  We help to spread a lot of the ideals behind the US and its subsequent democracy, give especially good representation to US foreign policy, and help put into place programs that help stabilize a developing nation.
