Venice Italy is a city built on water, how does their sewage and plumbing work?

Where is the plumbing for the water they get for drinking and showers etc? Are the pipes under water in the canals? Does the sewage go somwhere or just spill into the canals? Also how do the buildings exsist in water for so long? why dont the footings rot away? Imagine being a Plumber there, would you need diving equipment to unblock the drains? Very curious if anyone knows how the City works?

  1. In most places in the old city with the canals, the sewage is discharged directly into those canals.  They are polluted.  For cleaning the drains, the work would be done from the inside and the canals are not that deep.  It is interesting that Venice is sinking, not due to the water, but from lack of water in the aquifer.
