The core muscles are the ones found in the middle of your abdomen (both front and back, but usually people are concerned about the front ones).  These muscles are attached to your bones found in your upper body (shoulders, ribcage...) and to your pelvic bones, along with other muscles that control the bladder, leg movement, etc.  This is why tightening your lower abdominal muscles can pull your pelvic region upward.
