i want to start teaching my 1 yr old to read and ive seen all the advertisements for the your baby can read program but im pretty much broke. so i was hoping that if someone has used this program maybe you can help me with the basics.

i know some people might frown upon teaching him at such young age but he enjoys books and if i can help him learn to read at a younger age than why not .

therefore any information is appreciated .

  1. Wait one more year, this is why--most "teach your baby to read programs" use flash cards with the words written very large so the baby can distinguish the words.  This is a whole word approach to teaching reading, but the problem with whole word is that not all babies/children have the aptitude to learn this way and it can increase reading difficulty for those who don't (dyslexia).  The best way to teach a very young child to read is with phonics.  Beware, lots and lots of products claim to be phonics programs but are not.  It seems to me that any reading program that is very expensive is a gimmick designed to rip-off eager parents.

I would encourage you to enrich your baby's vocabulary now by reading lots of books and talking to your baby often about the interesting things he or she sees in the world rather than stressing over teaching them to read, it will make reading easier if your child knows LOTS of words.  Then, when your baby knows his/her shapes and animals sounds, he/she would also be able to learn the sounds that go with letters--phonic reading.  For the grand total of fifteen dollars, you could purchase the book "Teach your child to read in just ten minutes a day" by Sidney Ledson.  It is the program he uses at his school in Canada to teach two and three year olds to read.  100% of the children are reading by the end of the year after about 3 ten minute sessions a week.  Really reading, able to decode hundreds of words, not limited to a memorized list of under 100 words!  If $15 is too much, you can ask your library to order the book (most libraries take requests) or even e-mail me and I could send you a useful summary of what the program is.  I have used it and it is a simple, effective, FUN way to teach your toddler to read.  Good Luck, happy teaching!

  2. IF YOU CAN GET IT DONE , TELL ME IN AN EMAIL SO I CAN BEGAN THIS REVOLUTIONARY THING WITH MY 5MTH OLD!

  3. Give it a try because kids are amazeing these days my 5 year old GranDaughter is doing great and has'nt started kinder garden yet i think the most important thing is the time you spend with them.

  4. I think the flash card idea is good.  Start with the words he already knows how to say, so he can associate what he's saying with the word he is seeing.

  5. well i dont think the succses rate of the program is 100% but , if you are broke you can try flash cards beacuse it has been on the news that It may be effective, but wit every program ur not garreteed to work, what you do is write simple 2 and 3 letter words on a flash card and show them to your 1 yr old and you say the word it takes hard work but it might just workk, but until u can buy it just try this but im not saying it will just that it might, its worth a try but about the 'your baby can read' program, i wouldnt say it will totaly but i wouldnt totally spnd all my money on it, ur child will learn to read eventuly in its own time, for now just enjoy them:)

  6. Good Lord, what next?  Your Baby Can Do Math Before Birth?

This program preys on parent's fears of their children not being on top of the academic heap.  I bet the inventors of this program are making a pile of money.

    How sad.

  7. Pretty much - show them the word, read the word - moving your finger under it  - and show them what it is - a picture of whatever it is, or do the action.

I got those DVDs years ago when they first came out -- My daughter could read words at 16 months - I stopped working with her as much when my son was born - She knew all of her letters, the sounds of letters, could count to 30, tell you words that started with any letter - all at 2 or so.

she is almost 4 now and can read a lot of words, and completely understands letters make words, the sounds of letters - and has started writing

I made books with just the letter - no picture - then would say A - and make the A sound.... my two year old knows most of his letters within a couple days of showing him that book a few times (I think the pictures in the books are distracting and confusing - I wanted to stress JUST the letter - or else how can they tell an apple is not the letter A)

I think you can teach them SO much just by reading to them, and moving your finger along as you read - then showing them one word (no picture) on a card and reading it..... use familiar words - dog, bottle, stuff your baby knows. I think the main thing is to get the connection between written word, spoken word and meaning /object going --- it gets those parts of the brain connecting, so reading will come much easier. You'd have to devote hours and hours to actually get them to read a book - but I know my girl is way ahead with the little bit of a head start I gave her.

I'd buy the DVDs if you can - its MUCH easier to let them watch -- but you have to get them to sit down and watch it - my girl watched when she was an infant - my boy was too active and much less interested.....

Email if you want to know more - I find it facinating
