  1. Riesling is a great wine to start with.  It's a pleasant, sweet-ish white wine.  Great on hot summer days.

Chateau Ste. Michelle was mentioned.  Good, inexpensive American riesling.  My favorite is Collumbia Cellarmasters Riesling.  Both are good.

The American rieslings, to my taste, are a little "thin" - they lack complexity and depth.  That doesn't make them bad though.

A GREAT German wine is a Piesporter Goldtropfchen Kabinett.  Not too expensive and easy to find.  A perfect example of what a very good German riesling should be.

(A quick pointer - the sweetness of German rieslings is as follows...

Kabinett Feinherb - the least sweet.  Still sweet, but barely.  The Feinherb can be a little hard to find.

Kabinett - typically the dryest riesling you'll commonly find.

Spatlese - sweeter than the Kabinett, but I still wouldn't categorize it as sweet.

Auslese - Sweet.  Very good and generally more complex.

    Beerenauslese - sweeter

    Trockenbeerenauslese - sweeter still

Eiswein - "ice wine" - REALLY sweet and really interesting.  Not for dinner, but for desert.  Can be expensive.

Rieslings are wonderful and far more interesting than they're given credit for being.

  2. Rieslings have a floral aroma. They range from very dry and crisp to intensely sweet depending on where it is from. German Riesling is slightly sweet and balanced with some acidity. California Riesling tends to be sweeter.

Food and Wine Pairing: This type of wine goes well with chicken, fish, pork, and spicy foods.

Origin: Rieslings is one of the types of wine that originate from Germany. Great Rieslings are also produced in New York, Washington, California, and Australia.

  3. The first riesling I tasted was Chateau Ste. Michelle. I fell in love. It is fruity, smooth and refreshing. I don't know about other rieslings, but this one is great!

  4. Rieslings have become my favorite white over the past year,

This is a wine I did not llike until tasting dry Rieslings on a wine tour in the fingerlakes region of New York

The more popular sweet Riesling has a very fruity almost pear like aroma.  It's taste is fruity, grapey and very sweet.

The dry variety is somewhat more citrus like. With no risidual sugars the wine is dry and smooth.

The dry, semi-sweet and sweet Rieslings all come from the same grape.  The early harvest produces the dry variety, while most of the grapes are left after the normal harvest to create the sweet variety.
