How does the scoring at the WGC Accenture Match Play work?

I see like yesterday that Woody Austin beat Boo Weekly 3 and 2, what does the 3 and 2 stand for?

Like Tiger Woods beat Aaron Baddeley 1 up in 20 holes, I understand that because he only one by one hole. That's fairly easy to understand but on there I don't' understand what they mean.

  1. 3 and 2 (for example) means that Woody was up by 3 holes with 2 to play, so that there was no way for Boo to catch him, so the match was over (they only played 16 holes). In match play, you don't count strokes, you count who wins each hole.

  2. that means he has won 3 holes and with 2 left to play there is no way that weekly could win

Tiger was tied through 18 so they played until someone wins the hole

the person that takes these amount of strokes wins the hole

  3. A simpler way to think about this is that the championship was a best of 36 hole match.  For each hole that is tied, the number goes down by one.  Such that under the most extreme case, if one player wins the first 19 holes, the match is over.  19 and 17 (holes left to play.)  Since the player who has not won a single hole can at most win the next 17, s/he would still lose 17 holes won to 19 holes won.  So, matches end when one player is mathematically eliminated.  In a regular, 18 hole match, the worst drubbing you can get is to be down 10 with 8 to go.   At that point, it is game over.

In the most simple form, if you play a game "best two out of three", if one player wins the first two, you stop and don't play the third.  Same is true with match play golf, but it is playe best of 18 or 36.  If there is a tie at the end, playoff holes start and the first person to win a hole will win the match.

  4. 3 and 2 means he was 3 up with 2 holes left.  Since he is already 3 up and there is 2 holes left they don't play the last 2 holes.

They mentioned Tiger beatting Willie Aimes some years back

9&8 which means Tiger was 9 up with 8 holes left and the match is over after the 10th hole.  They don't bother playing the rest of the match because he can't catch up anyway.

  5. Simply put, Woody Austin beat Boo Weekly in 16 Holes.  There is a term in match play called "dormie"  which means that if one player is ahead by the amount of holes left in the match, then the player that is behind has to win that hole or the match is over.  Woody Austin was dormie after 15 holes so Boo had to win the 16th in order for the match to continue.  He didn''t.  That is where 3 & 2 comes from.
