  1. Examining the shrimp's appendages probably takes us back to when shrimp were microscopic and capsured their bits of food by mouth.  As they grew, the appendages came into play by shoveling food toward the mouth.  Shrimp, then approaching their size today, began using the appendages more and more as capture tools.  this accounts for today's appendage.  In a thousand years the appendage may approach that of a lobster or snow crab.  Ummm -- like to be around then!

  2. The shrimp's appendages are very similar to those of its relatives - crabs, lobsters, and even spiders and insects. At one level then, it has the appendages that the ancestor of all these animals had. However, it has special adaptations for feeding on little bits of detritus, or on rotting carcasses in the ocean (yep, gross huh?!).  They won't necessarily evolve bigger appendages - their appendages will evolve in response to the environment they are in. It could even be the case that smaller appendages will serve it better in the future!
