  1. its a combination of computer system on track level and a type of GPS. There is sensor boxes on track level and as the train passes over them it sends the message to the on board computer system to announce the next stop...Toronto just added this system to all subways, rts, streetcars and buses...surface routes (buses and streetcars) use a GPS system..

  2. Jay A described it well.  It's a combination of computers and automatic signaling between on-board computer and ground-based locating devices.

  3. I'm not sure.

  4. computers and radios

  5. Some of the answers here are pretty funny.  I totally depends on the territory.  Territories are controlled by dispatchers, they either light up signals in the cab or on signal masts along the railway.  Some territories don't have signals, but the dispatcher gives the conductor authority to occupy track between points (called track warrants).  Basically the dispatcher knows where the train is supposed to stop, and either gives the appropriate signals for stop, or the conductor reminds the dispatcher that they have a scheduled stop according to his paperwork which he prints before he gets on the train.

  6. Trains don't know anything.  That's why they are so happy to kill you if you get in the way. Stay in the clear and stay alive.

a guy in a tuxedo waves a wand at each station and a little rabbit pops out of a hat and makes the announcement to the fluttering of a thousand doves wings
