How does the water hyacinth filter waste from water?

Does it involve it's roots or something? How come it is able to do so?

  1. yes, it's the roots... they filter nutrients from the water... and those nutrients otherwise would have fed algae!!.. plus, their shade also helps starve out the algae... the roots are good hiding places for baby fish, too.... gold fish like to nibble on them....

    if you have it in your home garden pond, please be careful with it... it's terribly invasive if allowed to 'escape' into natural waterways or ponds... always destroy the extras that you don't need ... put in trash!!...
