most of the time u find somebody in ur area that u want to buy something from so u go meet them & then buy it in person. that's what i've always done.

Pretty simple - you contact a guy, meet him face to face, and give him either a check or pay cash, whichever the guy prefers - he'll tell you that during the email exchanges or the phone exchanges before you actually trade your stuff.
