How does this digital phone work?

How does this digital phone work through providers such as Brighthouse Networks and Time Warner? Does it come through the cable line or does it come through the internet?

the phone plugs into the modem with a RJ-45 unless you use a work/switch like I do....then you put it in there and it goes behind the wireless router!
