I suffer OCD, anxiety, depression, & Tourette's, & they told me I can't go in any branch. I'm 24.

But my friend's 18-yr. old sister is signed up to the Air Force, & she suffers SEVERE ADHD & Bipolar, as well as psychosis.

  1. She lied on item #10 of Standard Form 93 (Report of Medical History). Once her condition's symptoms manifest themselves they will begin the process of giving her a general discharge under honorable conditions for disqualifying, pre-existing medical conditions. The source below is the medical standard which covers her case. It also covers most of your conditions as well.

  2. She can't if she has any Psychological Disorder. She will have a Psych assessment and they will find the ADHD,Bi Polar and Psychosis and she will be Medical Discharged. She must of lied but don't worry they will find out, or if they don't you should definitely tell them. She will be handling weapon's, for her safety and the safety of others around her.

  3. well the tourettes is probably that  kept you out.  That is not good for using guns, machines, etc.  Also when you mix that with depression that can be a dosy.

    ADHD and bipolar can be treated with meds and she may of also lie on her application and that is not something that come up in the regular physical

    I had a navy guy tell me to lie and not say i have asthma when i went for my physical so i could get in

  4. She didn't tell the recruiter.

  5. Some recruiter goofed

    I would say she didn't tell them she has these problems, but it will be caught sooner or later.

  6. she's gonna get kicked out dear, there's no way she could handle it

  7. Well, having TS and OCD myself, there really is no reason I couldn't serve in the military.  The same is true for my sons, both of whom have TS and OCD (the youngest has ADD, as well), and many others.  It doesn't make sense, does it?

    I moderate a high-volume email list where "special needs" and many diagnoses are a primary topic.  One friend on that list has a son who is diagnosed with Bipolar (other dx's that I can't remember).  He wants to join the Air Force.  They told him he could join if he was off all meds.  Once he was in, they would evaluate him and prescribe meds.  It seems an odd way to go about things, but it came straight from Those Who Know in the USAF.  I was very surprised.  So was his mom.  <g>

    <shrug>

    Maybe you should visit recruiters for the various branches and talk with them.

    And, good *luck*.  :o)

  8. She never told the recruiter or the Dr when she took her physical.  I am an Army Vet and all branches of the service take about the same physical.  You cannot go into any branch of the military if you have any psychiatric condition, there is too much stress.  Sooner or later they will find out and she will probably wind up discharged....the worst part is that if they find out that she lied on her enlistment enrollment or contract she could wind up with a dishonorable discharge.

    Peace & Love  :)

  9. No offense, but neither of you should be in the military.  Military can be stressful, let alone adding mental instabilities to the picture.

    If it's true that your friend's sister does have these issues and she really is joining the Air Force then it's very possible she just wasn't truthful about her mental state to her recruiter.  It's also very possible it will be found out at a later date and she will be asked to leave.
