How does this guitar setup work ?

I saw the megadeth DVD that one night and i saw on Dave mustaine's guitar strap he had this thing black block looking thing sticking out of it that conected to his guitar how does he that work if hes not connected to the amp P.S. i saw kirk hammet with the same thing

The signal transmits from the thing plugged into the guitar to the receiver which is plugged into the amplifier.

Its a wireless transmitter.  The signal is sent to a receiver that is plugged into the amp.  Many artists use this as it frees them from being chained to their amp. Others feel that a wireless signal does not give you the same quailty signal that a direct cord does to fully experience the tone of the guitar.
