  1. Here is a link that may help. You can usually buy a manual for $10.00.

I would enquire about taking a few sewing lessons first. I was lucky enough to learn in school. Check rec centers or schools in the fall or look in the phone directory for private lessons. Sometimes the fabric stores have lessons as well. The public library has good books on sewing in the craft section.

  2. Yahoo groups has an older Kenmore sewing machine group.  You might considering joining that group. You'll find lots of helpful information and possibly have questions answered concerning this model.

Have you had the machine serviced?  Oiling and timing are good things to do before using the machine; it should be done at least once a year, and don't forget to use new needles!

    Good luck.

  3. You need to get the whole Sears part number, which is a 3 digit number followed by a point and a 4-8 digit number.  The three digit part tells who actually made the unit for Sears.  You may be able to get it for free or pay under $10.

The most basic steps will be covered in a library copy of a basic sewing by machine book.

The most complicated steps are properly filling and installing the bobbin under the sewing needle and threading the machine so it keeps the proper tension.   On simpler machines, the only adjustments are the length of stitch and how wide the zig-zag is if it has such a feature.

  4. Try looking on www.sewingusa.com

The model number is a 3 digit code as it explains on this site further.  They mention a couple of Kenmore manuals there.   My advice to you when your wife gets comfortable with sewing is to upgrade to a good old used Singer. They last forever.  Kenmore products tend to be a lesser quality.  I have owned my Singer 401a( from 1957 and handed down) for a lifetime practically and I only take it in for maintenance.  Try to get a sewing machine with metal gears as the plastic ones heat up quicker and break more often.  Ebay will sell good used machines from time to time, especially my model.  You could also go to a good reputable sewing machine repair shop.
