How does this pic have a black background before the pic shows up? [image inside]?

I've noticed that whenever an image has this black background the image becomes sharper and clearer. I have a feeling that it's been photoshoped, but I want to know how. :]

its a PNG file -- suffice to say a type of image file - most are made with layers and depending on the browser or program you are using to load it up it may load it by layers or even a pixelish load up where it will start black and then "fade" in, I use IE7.0 and it loads instantly I do not see a black background.
